Why should we be using Anti-Fatigue Mats in work?

Have you ever seen anyone using anti-fatigue mats in work? Chances are if you work in a big company you have. They’re not just limited to the large corporations though. They’re becoming increasingly popular in all offices, wether it’s a 50 person open plan office, or just you and your laptop. Here we examine why, and how they can help you.

What is an Anti-Fatigue Mat?

Anti-Fatigue mats are basically just mats for you to stand on, while working upright. They designed to reduce fatigue caused by standing in the one position for long periods of time. They can be made up of many different materials ranging from rubber, to carpet, and plastic to wood. Each different material has a different component and unique end goal. Styles include your standard square rubber mat to a more complex and beneficial plastic swivel mat that you can rotate on.

Why use Anti-Fatigue Mats?

Anti-fatigue mats are often used to decrease foot and lower limb disorders for workers who stand in one position for long periods. Although an Anti-Fatigue mat may not solve the problem entirely, it can definitely help combat the wear and tear on the back and legs, while also helping to prevent the problem in the first place. We don’t recommend standing continuously for 8 hours in one day, but with a sit-stand desk, you can alternate between sitting and standing at regular intervals. This is where the Anti-Fatigue mat comes in. If used in a correct manner, these really can contribute to your physical health in the work place!

How do Anti-fatigue Mats Work?

Standing at a desk or worktop for long periods of time on hard surfaces can be very uncomfortable and cause physical fatigue. Your leg muscles become totally static and constricted as they work overtime to keep you in an upright position. Blood flow is greatly reduced causing pain and discomfort.

This means a persons heart is forced to work harder to pump blood through these constricted areas and their body begins to run out of energy. However, if a person is allowed to stand on an anti-fatigue mat, their muscles will subtly contract and expand as they adjust to the flexibility of the mat.

This muscle movement increases blood-flow and increases the amount of oxygen reaching the heart. And fatigue is greatly reduced.
